News just in this morning – Alistair Te Ariki Campbell died yesterday, aged 84, “after a short illness”.
I heard him read at the Christchurch Books & Beyond festival back in 2000 or 2001. He seemed quite frail even then, but as soon as he started reading the hairs on the back of my neck stood up! Glorious work. Mainly from Gallipoli and Other Poems, if I remember rightly. (You can listen to a streaming audio file of him reading one of them at The New Zealand Electronic Poetry Centre.)
A backgrounder and some more links can be found on the library website. And coming soon – an interview with Joanna Preston herself!
Thanks for that Richard.
